Ms. Priest talked about U.S. Special Forces and the role of the military in world affairs. She responded to audience telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail.  Ms. Priest is the author of The Mission: Waging War and Keeping Peace with America’s Military, published by W.W. Norton and Company. The book argues that, traditionally reluctant to engage in humanitarian and peacekeeping assignments, the U.S. military, by virtue of taking on such missions in the 1990s, has nevertheless become the dominant day-to-day influence in foreign policy. While doing research for her book, Ms. Priest recorded interviews with Special Forces personnel who served in Afghanistan after 9/11 and with General Anthony Zinni, the former commander-in-chief of the U.S. Central Command from 1997-2000. Several audio tapes from these interviews are played throughout the program.
