Avoid the Smith rack if possible. If you have any low-back trouble, do this exercise on a leg-press machine. Pad the bar for comfort. Take the weight on your shoulders. Position feet straight forward and approximately 5-7 inches (pedal distance) apart. Keep head up, sighting above the horizontal. Keep back very straight. To protect your knees, keep your weight on your mid-foot and heels, not on the balls of your feet or toes. Squat down until the gluteals (butt muscles) just begin to activate - thighs about 30-45 degrees above horizontal. DO NOT go all the way down. Straighten legs but do not lock knees. Exhale as you rise.
