As for Bangkok, I don't really know where to start. It is so big and sprawling that it was hard to get a grip on. It seems to have no center or common theme. Just 9 million people, horrendous traffic, hookers, street food stands and hawkers, tuk tuks (3 wheeled motorized taxis), randomly placed 60-story towers, c****s, and temples. Oh, and elephants in the streets. I chose not to stay in the Khao San road area, which is the largest traveller's ghetto I have seen yet. It has blocks and blocks of guesthouses, restaurants, bars, street vendors, food hawkers, tattoo parlors, Thai massage places, internet cafes and tour/travel agencies. I stayed instead in Sukhumvit, which I had read had more of the City's upscale restaruants, bars, hotels and nightlife. While this may be true, that meant it also had more than its share of hostess bars, questionable "massage parlors," and places where 6-12 "girls" (in quotes because so many of them do not actually have two X chromosomes) catering to the Western, paunching, balding/greying 50-something man. It turned out, though, that while still in Sukhumvit, I was actually many blocks from the center of that, randomly ending up at a hotel in Bangkok's Japantown. So ...
