This video starts up front--but does all relate to helping the horse with the rear foot/leg handling issue...the front work is relaxation prep. This horse never kicked when handling his rear legs/feet, but he would fling the rear right leg around a lot when I initially would handle it and this method has calmed that right down. I’m running my hand just slightly this side of the topline with light pressure. The prep relaxes and helps him to realise before I get to handling the leg that nothing is wanted from him and that I can do something with his rear leg other than always want it for something. It should be done much slower than I did it here--did it fast so you wouldn't have to sit through 15 minutes of this : ) If he were an actual kicker, I'd wear my helmet and I always wear steel toed shoes--and be sure to stand more safely than I did here and perhaps do this first with a soft sea sponge duct taped on a long whip or non-sharp stick and gradually shorten the distance--I wasn't sure how to stand and not block the camera and he has never kicked and I've had him since 4 months old so I was more lax about where I was standing so I wouldn't block the camera--always be safe. To give proper credit, I got this from a JMasterson equine massage video--he does a lot better job and more indepth job : )- I highly recommend his equine massage video and learning his techniques : ) Good massage techniques are great for a nervious or spooky horse.
