Today was insane. Today was long. It felt like 3 days in one, which should be a good thing when traveling under such tight schedules. Don't get me wrong, I had a great day exploring the city. It was slightly frenetic at times, amusing always, and entailed the walking/running of 24906 steps (courtesy of Saskia's pedometer). So, where to begin? I guess at the beginning. A long time ago, in a former Soviet Republic far far away, a quest began. Well, a series of quests began. .. Act One: Target: Babin Yar- sight of Nazi genocide. Early in WWI, Nazi invaders of the Ukraine rounded up and slaughtered 34000 Jews in a ravine in the northwest of the city within a 48 hour period. Duration: Unknown/ Until target is met. Objectives: The sight of the massacre is quite complicated actually. The event occurred in a ravine in an area that was at the time just outside the city. During the Soviet period, a giant, excessive statue was erected in typical Soviet style to honor the dead. Also typical of the Soviet's, there was no mention of the fact that Jews were killed (reminds me of the monument at the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen- see earlier blog entry...) Not only does the monument misrepresent who was killed at Babin Yar, it was placed at the wrong location ...
