Many people who drink Scotch whisky may not know the name Ian Buxton, or if your old enough may think of the 1960′s cricketer and footballer. However, Ian has worked in the Scotch whisky and drinks industry for 20 years. He is conference Director of the World Whiskies Conference, a Keeper of the Quaich, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, former Group Marketing Director at Glenmorangie, writer and a whisky book & memorabilia collector. I caught up with Ian at the Number 3 Gin launch in the Berry Bros & Rubb shop, London where we had a quick chat about one of his passions – recreating rare whisky books. Ian has also books: titles include Whisky History, Hints & Tips and a facsimile edition of Aeneas MacDonald’s 1930 classic Whisky (Canongate, 2006) to which he contributed a new introduction and appreciation. He edited and contributed to the Beer Hunter, Whisky Chaser. He has also created some stunning repoductions of rare whisky books, such as Ian buxton“The manufacture of whisky and plain spirits”. A must for any whisky enthusiast. One note on these, and many whisky books is that due to the rarity of many of these titles the cost of buying some original books is high (in some cases over £1000). Also, recreating these books with amazing precision is expensive as the skills to manufacture these books has niched in a trade which lingers on the edge of Victorian industrialisation. Modern technology assists in some areas such as printing and all important scanning, but binding, editing and proof reading still fall to man power. All in all this isn’t a task for the faint hearted! See the video above for more info…
