Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, with your toes pointing slightly outward. Position the barbell behind your neck so that it rests on the trapezius muscle. If the bar causes discomfort, place a towel under it. Grasp the barbell using a wide overhand grip with your elbows pulled back. Contract your abdominals. Lower your buttocks by bending your hips and knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Do not bend your knees to the point where they extend over the toes. Throughout the movement, keep your back straight and your head up. Make sure that your knees do not turn inward. Your weight should be concentrated over your heels, not your toes. Pause for a moment and, without moving your back, straighten your hips and knees until you return to the starting position. Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.
