Toronto is my hometown, but Toronto is a city of many small towns and villages which have been absorbed over the years. In 1834 when the City of Toronto was amalgamated, it had only 9250 inhabitants. Today about 3 million people reside within the borders of the city which have expanded as rapidly as the population. As this expansion progressed, swallowing up smaller communities as it went the various neighbourhoods developed individual characteristics so that although we are a single city we are made up of a multitude of unique communities. I was raised in Riverdale and The Beaches, 2 districts just East of the Don Valley and bordering on Lake Ontario and as I matured I became familiar with Cabbagetown, Downtown, Queen West, Parkdale and High Park, each of which are one step West across the Southern edge of the city. I have lived in other neighbourhoods, but their character and mine did not agree. It seems that I prefer living near Lake Ontario and the older parts of the city where development preceded the scourge of urban planners who designed those terrible bedroom communities called the suburbs which blight most large cities today.
