Most of us were staying at the same place and the hostel picked us up from the train station. The first impressions of Xian were of really bad traffic and fairly bad pollution. After checking in i went for a wander around by myself. I was walking along and happened to look back into a starbucks near the bell tower to see this girl waving madly at something, before realising she was waving at me and it was Nadya who i met briefly a couple of nights ago in Pingyao! Bit random, but i had a coffee with her then we went to have a look round the muslim quarter. Xian has quite a large muslim population which my book says are descended from 8th century arab soldiers. We had a look round the central mosque which was quite interesting. Despite being a mosque it looks like a chinese temple, although inscriptions are in arabic. We then spent around 2 hours walking around trying to find this bird market that was on my map and seeing who could spit date stones out the furthest. She won most of the time, but i reckon my technique is improving. We went out that night to this club called 1+1 which was good although a little strange. There was no bar, just waiters who wandered around, and you could only buy either beer for 30Y a bottle or entire ...
