(At least, I think it was yesterday - with the 15 hour time difference I'm still confused!) Since our flight wasn't until the afternoon, in the morning we headed out in the heat (it was crazy hot and humid by 10am) to the 2-28 Peace Park. This beautiful urban park was originally created during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan but now commemorates the victims of the massacre of Taiwanese civilians on February 28, 1947. The "2-28 incident" began when unarmed Taiwanese civilians gathered to protest the police's beating of a street vendor and killing of a bystander. The Kuomintang government, which took over after the Japanese occupation ended in 1945, squashed the rebellion violently, killing an estimated 30000 people. This began 40 years of "white terror" and martial law under the Kuomintang. Now the park is a place to promote peace and remember the victims of 2-28 with a spire-topped monument. And, after so many years of the incident as a taboo subject, today's democratic government leaders remember the massacre and present certificates to victims' families at each anniversary. On a daily basis, local residents also seem to enjoy it as a place to relax in the shade of the many gazebos, do their exercises and bring their children to play.
