Ms. Gordon, who had just completed a study on the economic and environmental impact on the U.S. dependence on foreign sources of oil, discussed the conclusions of her study.  She said the United States would suffer economically if a war broke out in the Middle East, and the resulting oil shortage could recreate the oil crisis, and long lines at gasoline pumps, of the mid-1970s. The answer to averting the crisis according to Ms. Gordon was, among other things, the utilization of alternate forms of transportation to the solo auto driver, a tremendous user of gasoline and oil.
