Ginger is a mid twenty year old rescue mare that has a long history with bouts of laminitis and founder. For the past year and a half, her founder has been treated by a "Natural" hoof care specialist. I saw her for the first time last Saturday, July 31st 2010. At that time, she was for a intents and purposes, immobile. Her right front foot was in much worse condition than her left. The right foot had a large amount of distortion at the toe that had been left for no apparent reason. She could bear weight on her left but not her right. Due to the pain in her feet, she had confined herself to standing in the only soft area she could find, her manure pile under her shed. She refused to move on her own. With boots on her feet, she could be forced to move with great difficulty. I returned on Thursday, August 8th to install positive pressure rigid heartbar shoes on both front feet. Immediately after installing the shoes, she was able to walk on her own quite freely. She still walked with quite a limp on right front but the pain in the foot seemed much more tolerable than before. Before, she had to have water brought to her. Now she travels around her paddock on her own to feed and water. She is by no means cured and will never recover to 100% soundness. However, in the space of just a couple of hours, her quality of life has greatly improved. I’m looking forward to seeing her again in a few weeks.
