Savannah Monitors enjoy hunting snails. They eat sterile mice about once every two weeks, and they enjoy low fat scrambled eggs enriched with a 1/4 tea. of vitamin powder for breakfast every day. They have a hard time telling hot and cold so the food must be below 100 degrees or they get burned. They play hide and seek and they will never give up their hiding place if they get a good one. They have a short hibernation stage they go through each year and they can stay hidden within 8 feet of a home for up to 3 months as long as the temp doesn’t drop below 50 degrees F. Keep a cage 2ft longer then maximum growth and width. Allow them to dig by keeping the substrate really moist and warm. This Sav is 3ft 4inches long. You can tell they inflate with air while basking, they have pouchy bellies. If you watch his belly, it shows his breathing is tense, he is contracting and hissing very softly while he moves through the grass. When he expands in the basking light he can swallow air and become one huge flat round disc.
