Nationwide shortage of road paint reported

New Mexico road crews may have to delay painting some streets this summer. Transportation officials say there’s a shortage of road paint nationwide due to a lack of raw materials like resin, an ingredient used in road paint. San Juan County public works crews say they may deal with the problem firsthand. They ordered $80,000 worth of paint Monday, hoping to get road striping projects finished in the summer when it's warm. There's enough road paint stored in San Juan County to at least start striping a major road like County Road 350 next week, public works director Dave Keck said. The New Mexico Department of Transportation says it will find a way to get striping projects done, even if it means painting lines with fewer coats of paint. Officials want to stress that safety will not be an issue because of the shortage.
