The level of Devils Lake has dropped about a half-foot from its record-setting level in late-June. But there’s no reason to believe the lake is finished with its decade-long rise. Water levels are up more than two feet this year - after rising more than three feet last year. It's now eating up farmland and encroaching on towns such as Minnewaukan. And North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad says it's time for action in Washington. He says the state can't afford to let the lake continue to rise without an outlet because it will soon surge out of its basin and flow into rivers of eastern North Dakota. (Sen. Kent Conrad, -D- ND) "The facts are as clear as they can be. We are six feet away from an uncontrolled release of water. The lake went up over three and a half feet last year, its gone up over two feet this year. If that doesn't get their attention I don't know what would." Senator Conrad visited the Devils Lake region this month, holding public meetings to talk about the problems that are mounting for people living in the region.
