Career choices for Teenagers A report out this week from jobs board Monster highlights the career choices being considered by teenagers. The report starts from the premise that media and popular culture is playing an ever more increasingly important influence on the career choices that young people are making. Really? Is this news? Hasn’t this always been the case? Since the dawn of time (well at least the dawn of my time) teenagers role models have come from popular culture. The more parents have tended to dislike the role model choice, the more teenagers have tended to love them! Still back to the report, which found that More than a third of teenagers aged 14 and 15 say television and films have steered what they want to do at work. Nothing new here then. Once we've gone to University it would appear the media has less of an influence on our career considerations, with 23 pc of recent Graduates influenced in their career choices by what they watch and read in the media. When asked what top three industries they would like to work in, teenage girls picked arts and entertainment followed by education and healthcare. Teenage boys, by way of contrast, chose the IT sector as their number one, followed by engineering and then arts and entertainment, The top role models in evidence also shows the influence popular culture has on teenagers, with Girls naming Rihanna and the boys Mark Zuckerberg as top role models.
