But I'll get to that in a moment. The bus ride to Xi'An was uneventful save for more unnecessary staring! And the uncalled for butting in line at our bathroom break along the way... seriously people... familiarize yourself with the concept of a line-up!! I have come to really enjoy spending time on the buses and trains though... sitting reading a book, staring out the window, listening to my iPod and recalling moments in time in my journey. The factories and refineries continued to 'grace' the landscape between Pingyao and Xi'An and it got me thinking about commercialism and consumerism... I conscientiously made a pledge to buy less unnecessary ****... especially plastics. I do LOVE to shop though so, although I suspect this promise will not last long I, at the very least, am more aware of the impact. The countryside was again drab, dusty and dirty... and then I saw wild hollyhocks growing along side the expressway which was so unexpected and refreshing. I took a taxi to the hostel where I'd be staying in Xi'An... yes, I finally broke down and stayed in hostels! And, they paid for the taxi! I was finding China to be much more expensive so I though I could save a few bucks by staying at a hostel. A lot of them have single rooms which was great... I had ...
