The Missouri River in Bismarck could reach its highest point since the Garrison Dam was built almost 60 years ago. The river is forecast to hit 14.4 feet next week, which would surpass the record of 14.2 feet set in 1975. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are increasing the releases from the Garrision Dam. Heavy rainfall in the Missouri and Yellowstone river basins, combined with slower-than-normal mountain snowpack melt, has filled up Garrison Dam. The Corps says be prepared for an extra two feet of water in the Bismarck-Mandan area within the next 7 to 10 days. Bismarck is expected to get up to 2 inches of rain through Sunday night. National Weather Service Meteorologist Patrick Ayd says that amount of rain could cause a temporary rise of several tenths of a foot on the river. Homeowners along the river are busy perparing for more water. Along the banks, many homeowners are patching up rip rapping, bracing for the rising water. On Fox Island homeowners are placing no wake signs along the river bank -asking boaters to stay away from the shore line to prevent waves from eroding the bank even more. > Homeowners living along the Missouri River says roadways around their homes are getting pretty congested, with curious motorists. The homeowners ask that if people don’t need to be in the area, that they please stay out. They say the congestion is creating problems with getting trucks to their homes, that are carrying rocks and sand to hold off the water. The water is already over the banks and more is on its way.
