Shot 09/01/2010.## BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. — The search for two kidnapped children ended months later with the arrest of a Shepherdsville man. Police said there was never a kidnapping and forensics helped crack the case. A letter left in a rest area bathroom off Interstate-65 south of Shepherdsville claimed two children were taken from Indianapolis by a truck driver and were headed to Nashville. The search sparked a search for the two children, but it quickly turned to a search for the person who penned the note. "They were able to lift off of what we would call a blank sheet of paper, something that the naked eye could not even see at all," Bullitt County Detective Lt. Scotty McGaha. Working from the words they could see, written on a torn sheet of paper and taped to the mirror in a bathroom, police from several agencies in three states said they determined early on the kids weren’t missing, and in fact didn't exist. Then the focus turned to finding the person who wrote the note. "A lot of man hours and obviously a lot of money was put into that, so then we tried to focus on who was the person who put the note in there," McGaha said. Bullitt County detectives turned to Indiana State Police for forensic testing of the paper. "They were able to pull off that blank piece of paper where someone had written on that prior piece of paper in front of that and it indented onto the second sheet of paper," McGaha said. The indent impression gave police the address of a business in Hardin County where the piece of paper originated, but not the writer. The paper held the fingerprints of seven different people. Detectives said the forensics link Thomas Napper to the Hardin County business, the piece of paper and the rest area where he claimed he found the bogus note.## sound with law enforcement; shot of note; ext. rest stop; more sound with law enforcement; reporter standup##
