Filmmaker Alan Berliner attempts to tell the life story of his grandfather, a Palestinian Jew who escaped the dangers of World War II, only to spend most of his life working in Japan, far away from his wife and children. His family saw him as an absent father who shook off responsibility to pursue his own interests. But those he did business with in Japan paint a glowing portrait of an admirable adventure seeker.
