Talal Al-Haj, Al Arabiya’s NY/UN Bureau Chief, arranged and planned a trip around the world in Sept. 2009 to various islands that are under threat from climate change, with the support of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). His aim was to show the people in the Arab and Islamic worlds the dangers of climate change to humanity as a whole. Al-Arabiya, in addition to Talal Al-Haj's reports from around the world, also aired, as part of the comprehensive coverage, reports from its reporters across the Arab world. The aim of this campaign was to educate our Arab Viewers about the slow but certain threat of climate change to the survival of humanity. It is noteworthy that the Arab world is the major world producer and supplier of Carbon Fuels that contribute to world pollution. Hence the Arab population awareness is so important, so that their governments can adopt greener policies. Talal al-Haj has shot, written and edited this series of reports/documentary while traveling to small island nations in the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This documentary and news coverage of the sinking islands, along with Talal Al-Haj's coverage of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) in December 2009, received the Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize for Broadcast Journalism Coverage of the UN and its Agencies Gold Award in December 2010.
