Hot and hazy Saturday afternoon in early September. The haze so thick the flying was marginal VFR. I flew over to Live Oak, Florida (Suwannee - 24J airport) and flew back. At Live Oak I saw a beautiful Legend Piper Cub and got to speak to the owner. Live Oak and Lake City is where I first learned to fly in the early 1970s! The Live Oak airport is much more today than it was then. In 1970 the runway was only 2,500 feet as I recall; now it is more than 4,000 feet, fenced in per Homeland Security, and a bunch of gorgeous new hangars. Returning to St. Augustine I was told to enter left downwind for Runway 31, and that is what this video clip shows. The threshold is displaced about 1,800 feet for ongoing construction, you can see the construction trucks to the left of the runway on taxiway D. Arriving I heard ATC calls to Henry Vorpe’s Columbia 350. Sure enough as I taxied to Hangar R8 on the South Ramp, there was Henry and his wife and their dogs, and Henry was putting his Columbia in his hangar. Henry had flown to Biloxi and back - a two hour twenty minute flight in his Columbia!
