Hydrogen fuel celled vehicles could revolutionize the way we drive and cut emissions, helping the environment... but not for years from now. The technology on these cars combines stored hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity to run the car, and would only emit harmless water vapor into the atmosphere. This technology could reduce our reliance on oil, as prices continue to spike, but the problem is that it’s so new and developing that car makers can not make these vehicles in a profitable way yet. Even if all the technical problems that are associated with these new types of engines, the cost of manufacturing them is still so cost prohibitive that it doesn't make sense to start mass producing them yet. In fact, a new government study showed that Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars are probably about 12 years off from being a reality... the study estimated that by 2020, automakers will be able to sell 2 million cars with hydrogen fuel cell tech... which is less than 1 percent of all vehicles in the country. Even if the government provides massive subsidies for automakers, it will still be years before these cars can be produced efficiently. So if you're looking for an eco friendly new vehicle, don't hold your breath for a hydrogen fuel cell car... stick with that hybrid or Smart Car you've been eyeing.
