A major new attraction at the city’s $59 million Southport Broadwater Parklands is set to make a splash this weekend with the opening of 'The Rockpools' water play area. The Rockpools incorporates a custom-designed creek bed and series of pools and jets that empty and fill. Economic Development and Tourism Committee Chair Councillor Susie Douglas said the parklands had something to offer the whole family, with the new Rockpools aimed at younger visitors. "This was always going to be one of the parklands' key features and it is fantastic to have it open to the community in time for Christmas and the peak summer holiday season," said Cr Douglas. "The new feature includes water bubblers, jets and sprays and alongside is a new 'dry-play' area with a climbing frame, barbeques and picnic tables." Divisional Councillor Dawn Crichlow said the Rockpools water dumping feature was a unique piece designed by Urban Art Projects. "The water feature is quite spectacular and incorporates a shroud of seagrass stencilling with water erupting intermittently in sequences," said Cr Crichlow. "There has been a strong focus on sustainability and the water used in the Rockpools is chlorinated water from the Broadwater. "This new feature will really complement the nearby Café Rockpool, which opened recently, and will be very popular with the kids, particularly over summer.
