Purpose: - A Combustion Reaction is modeled. (The alcohol vapors react with oxygen and yield carbon dioxide and water.) - Activation Energy is modeled. (The heat energy from a small flame provides the activation energy for a much stronger reaction to take place.) - An Exothermic Reaction is modeled. (The experiment can be used to explain an exothermic reaction. Heat is released as a product and is visible through the flames produced.) Description: - A flame is added to a water jug containing alcohol vapors. Flames are produced which travel down into the jug, and a central flame shoots upwards from the mouth of the jug. Safety: - Wear goggles. - Use caution when lighting the water jug; keep hands away from flame by utilizing a long splint (metal rod works best) and hold rod as far from flames as possible. - Students should be at least 5 feet away from demonstration. - Carry out the demonstration on a lab table with high ceilings above — preferably a flame resistant ceiling. Chemical Explanation: - Alcohols readily evaporate and form vapor. (Can be likened to the air in a bathroom after a hot shower, when explaining to children.) This means that alcohols are volatile. Alcohol’s vapors are extremely flammable, meaning they don't require much activation energy to ignite. This low activation energy allows a single flame to start a much larger combustion reaction. The alcohol vapors in the water jug burn in the presence of oxygen (combust) and yield carbon dioxide and water ...

Since a clear winner has emerged for this year’s QQOQQ, I've decided to award it early. The QQOQQ is awarded for a simple question asked in the arrogant expectation that there's no possible answer, and this year there is no competition.
