Students, employees and alumni of George Fox University are teaming up with professional artists for a fundraiser to benefit the victims of the Jan. 12 Haiti earthquake. An “Empty Bowls” event, for which artists will fire and sell pottery bowls at a “Night for Haiti” meal later this spring, begins Feb. 5-6 with a “pottery marathon” that will result in the creation of more than 1,500 bowls on the university’s Newberg, Ore., campus. “We anticipate dozens of volunteers – hundreds are more likely,” said Mark Terry, an assistant professor of art. Volunteers will do everything from helping create the bowls and serving at the dinner to offering potters massages. Plans call for proceeds from the “Night for Haiti” meal, the date of which has yet to be determined, to go to George Fox-based teams that can provide real-time assistance in Haiti – service-oriented groups that include engineering, nursing, social work and missions students, among others. This marks the university’s second “Empty Bowls” fundraiser. In 2005, nearly $20,000 was raised to assist the “untouchable” caste on the coast of India following the tsunami. “We hope to do much more this time,” Terry said.
