The photos on display at the World Press Photo Show in Paris this month demonstrate this odd attraction and fascination we have to all that is disturbing and shocking. Despite the aesthetic beauty of this photo-journalistic collection, the viewer is often confronted with harsh/gruesome reality portrayed in photographic images. The blood and pained expressions seem to lure the viewer in.. to present a cruel reality..one which is exploited in nearly all media...television, the press, and film....events which we rarely see first-hand but see daily in media The traditional appeal of art is here inversed as the observer explores a fascinating repulsion. Images of a bloody girl buried beneath rubble after an explosion in the Middle East or those of a man being lapidated for committing acts of adultery in Somalia are photographs which attract the most attention. Why is this? Are we now programmed to respond merely to the shocking? The images now portrayed in the media repulse us...yet ironically captivate us much in the same way as a violent car accident which is horrifying but, at the same time, which we cannot turn away from..
