The video is a portrait of a German Hobby Indian, named Gerhard Fischer, living in Riesa nearDresden. A Hobby Indian practices living history by imitating the Native American’s culture; customs, clothes, music, dances or food. Fischer is practicing his hobby since 40 years, since the years 60ies in the former GDR until now. The video refers to the motivations and the backgrounds of his Indian hobby. It shows the role of an individual and a social phenomenon searching self-realization during two different political systems (former GDR and Germany today). Hobby, life and profession became a unity during the years. Identity, individual freedom, and its realization in the profession, but also financial care, trouble and unemployment is expressed in the metaphor of the Indian. The definition “real Indians” ( Native Americans) and Hobby Indians, copy and original, looses the exactly classification in the video. There is a similarity between the lifes of Gerhard Fischer and Karl May: both traveled only in late years to the places of their fascination and longing. Gerhard Fischer received as a gift a trip to Los Angeles and Las Vegas from the travel company L’turs.
