Secretary Cohen announced that he is recommending quartering male and female trainees in more separate areas.  He also stressed the need for greater supervision of recruits, more rigorous training and obtaining more qualified trainers. Then he and General Shelton took reporters' questions. Last week, the Joint Chiefs of Staff rejected recommendations from a panel headed by Nancy Kassebaum-Baker which would completely separate the sexes throughout basic training.
