We finally hit Gōruden Wīku Japanese Golden Week—a set of holidays—from April 29th Showa's Day (or the previous emperor's birthday) to May 3rd, Constitution Day, May 4th Greenery day, and May 5th, kodomo no hi or children's day, which is today! The weather, which has been cold, rainy, and gloomy has changed to glorious sunny skies and warm, but pleasant weather—and it is most difficult to stay inside and translate given the riot of nature's beauty as well as all the events taking place outside my door. So today was kodomo no hi, and I decided to do something. The streets have been quiet these past few days as many Tokyo-ites have left town for the country, or simply left the country to the beaches of Hawaii, Malaysia—you name it. I decided I did not want to fight the crowds leaving town and would rather sample the joys to be hand in the city on a walking tour. The result today was seven hours of hiking in town to two small shrines with matsuri. With a Japanese friend of mine, we went to Kameido Tenjin Shrine (www.kameidotenjin.or.jp in Kinshicho, a station along the Sobu line beyond Akiba.
