there is little containment tonight as crews try to stop the fire from destroying any more property. we have live team coverage of this wild day on the fire watch. we start with joe bartels-- live near mayhill-- with the latest on the situation there. the mayhill fire has charred an estimated 2-thousand acres at last check. we are stationed at the command center in cloudcroft whh is just up the road from the fire and this is as close as they are letting us get right now. chopper video shows just flames shooting high from the trees. state foresty says at least 3 structures have burned but it’s unclear if those were homes. around 500 people ve been evacuated from the mayhill area. "we saw the smoke. we went around the hill to check and see how bad it was. we could see flames and as soon as we returned to our cabin, the deputy sheriff of otero county said we needed to be ready to leave at a moments notice." structures including homes remain threatened evwn though officials say the fire has burned past mayhill and is moving north and east away from the village. high winds have prevented air tankers from making drops to try and help get containment. highway 82 remains closed from highway 244 to highway 13. we're told only a dozen people have checked in at the evacuation center at cloudcroft high school. the cause of the fire is under investigation. reporting live in cloudcroft joe bartels kob eyewitness news 4 this is new video of the miller fire in the gila national forest. that fire also forced evacuations near silver city. the latest information puts the blaze at 33-thousand acres. our crew was stopped at a roadblock ... but was able to get these shots of the area. that fire is one cause of the haze people have been seeing in moriarty. we got calls from viewers all afternoon — worried about what's causing the smokey conditions. the moriarty ranger district tells us the haze came from both the miller fire in the gila-- and a fire burning in arizona
