Professor Goldstein talks about his book The Real Price of War: How You Pay for the War on Terror, published by New York University Press.  He talks about how much President Bush’s war on terror is costing American taxpayers and explains how the money is being spent. He also compares the current monetary sacrifices being made by Americans to the sacrifices that were made during past wars. He noted that, while the cost estimates of the war in Iraq range from $120 billion to $200 billion, the total cost is likely to be much more than either of those figures. He also placed the costs of the war in the context of household spending. He noted that in previous wars, the highest level of taxation ranged from 77% to 94%. He asserted that the wealthiest Americans have traditionally borne the burden of paying for military conflicts financially, but noted that while "rich Americans pay for the wars, poor Americans fight them." He described President Bush's policy of lowering taxes during wartime as "unprecedented" and a "fiscal mess."
