iReport — This is a famous buddha statue in Bahirawakande, Kandy situated in Sri Lanka. Many people of all walks of life come to see this awesome statue. It is a landmark and iconic statue, which can be seen many miles away in the Kandy town area, and within easy access to anyone wanting to see this Buddha statue. Once you get to the Monastry in the hills, there is a panoramic view of the whole Kandy city area. I thought I would take this iconic buddha statue for my assignment today, as it is something of reverance and beauty. This is a place of quiet beauty and meditation as you will behold from the pictures and videos. A very long long time ago according to the Chief priest of the Monastry, he told me that a lady was sacrified by the people of the area to a demon named Bahirawa, to make things more better to their area. Thus the name Bahirawakande was born for that area and temple. This iconic buddha statue was built in 1972 by the then Chief Incumbent the Ampitiya Nayake Thero, and thorugh donations from people of different faiths like Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, and Muslims and Internation countries this statue was born. At the time the Chief Priest was getting this statue constructed half way through he passed away, you can see his statue also in the monastry garden, where two child buddhist monks are playng in the pond. This statue took 17 years to complete, and once it was completed the Late President Ranasinghe Premadasa declared it open, and from this day on.... there are many people who make it a point to visit this Monastry, to view the Buddha statue.
