Recovering from Spinal Cord Injury: What Prevents Recovery?

0 of 5 Stars
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is considered one of the most profound life- changing experiences that confront mankind. Similar to cancer it is considered incurable to date, despite many advancements having been made. In this program a general overview and personal experiences of spinal cord injury are presented followed by a presentation on what prevents recovery of spinal cord injury. Perhaps one of the greatest areas of breakthrough in SCI research is the improved understanding in the different mechanisms with which a healthy body fends off attempts of injured nerve to recover. Dr. Fehlings provides an insightful overview of regeneration obstacles to SCI recovery. One of the biggest areas of controversies lies in the applicability of animal research to the actual human clinical reality. This area of applicability of animal research to human nature is termed ‘Translational Research’. It is not uncommon for media to jump on promising research publications pertaining to rodent SCI animal models – thus raising the hopes of the SCI community, just to be confronted with sobering realities and many dashed hopes later on. Finally a critical review of the results of translational research into SCI care is provided by a leading bench and clinical SCI researcher. There remain considerable obstacles in bridging clinical and bench research arenas. Patient care realities of conducting SCI research in the United States of America remain a serious obstacle to research. In conclusion experts field critical questions pertinent to SCI recovery strategies from audience members.
