Also known as the Asian house shrew, this individual was observed forraging amongst leaf litter at mid-day on the edge of a clearing of tropical dry rainforest at an altitude of 300m on Gaya Island. Gaya island is the largest (3700 acres) of a group of 5 islands which comprise a park, known since the 1970s as the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, though it was originally made a protected forest reserve by the british, back in 1923,making it the oldest reserve in Sabah, the northernmost state of Malaysian Borneo. There is one called Chuchundra in Rudyard kipling’s Jungle Book, although he mistakingly refers to it as a musk rat, which is a totally different species (Ondatra zibethicus). It is a species widespread throughout SE Asia, but I wanted to record it as it was the first I'd seen in the wild.
