tonight we get reaction from the firefighters union and the mayor to public safety director darren white’s abrupt retirement today. white was dogged by questions all week about a minor crash his wife was in---and why he drove her to the hospital instead of waiting for an ambulance. eddie garcia joins us live at city hall with more on white's decision. the afd union tells me that white's salary should be used on public safety and not an administrator — the mayor says that white's sudden retirement is a sign of strenth and character. the announcement came at the end of business friday from embattled former safety director darren white who is on the east coast with his wife. "i am announcing my retirement today" he said "in order to end the distraction surrounding my wife's recent accident." the mayor thanked darren white for his many years of public service - but noted an internal investigation is on-going. myself and the community, we want facts. there's two sides of concern on that issue - let's just get the facts together and then we'll know what we've got on our hands. police say a week ago wedensday... white's wife kathleen got into a minor crash--- her doctor says she suffered a seizure ...and was already on anti- seizure medication. her husband took her to the hospital rather than wait for an afd ambulance. just yesterday the firefighters union voted they have no confidence in white. our members felt that some comments that were made were offensive and that he didn't have faith or confidence in what we had brought to the scene. now the union is say white's job should go unfilled. i don't think it's necessary at all i think we can use it as savings and allow the police chief and the fire chief to do their jobs. i can tell you, if i didn't think that the organization needed one i wouldn't have had one, up till today. the mayor says he will meet with top city leaders to determine what to do about white's position. in the meantime, he's praising white. yo...
