The first colosseum was built under Emperor Vespasian in the center of Rome. It was completed by Emperor Titus in 80 AD and played a huge part in entertainment and politics. The colosseum became the largest building of its kind and towered over 160 feet high. Its walls had 4 tiers of windows and were also decorated with columns and arches. It was very solid and made of concrete, brick, and stone. Most of the exterior of the colosseum was covered in marble and travertine which were quarried from pits over 20 miles away. It had no less than 80 entrances and accommodated around 55000 spectators. People of all ages and classes crowded in the colosseum. The first tier contained the emperor, senators, and state priests. Above them sat distinguished citizens, then the middle class which was then followed by favored slaves and foreigners. The poor and women occupied the fourth and highest tier. The view was all the same though and the show lasted all day, from sunrise to sunset.
