Hypnotic percussion and vocals stirred the audience to the dancefloor at this performance by the Sudanese/Egyptian collective, Rango, at Band on the Wall. Taking their name from a vintage xylophone, Rango play trance-inducing music from Sudanese Zar mystic healing ceremonies, Nubian wedding melodies and ritualistic tales. In this excerpt, humorous role-playing comes to the fore in a song about the Sudanese in the Egyptian army of bygone times. Filmed by the Band on the Wall AV Unit on 12th July 2010. The Rango xylophone first appeared in Egypt during the 1820’s and became all but extinct by the late 1970s due to religious intolerance of the Zar healing ceremonies for women and by the growing dominance of Arabian pop music. It was thought that the undocumented repertoire of "rango music" had been lost to history. It was not until a Nile TV documentary in the 1990s that the last surviving rango player was rediscovered, living in Cairo. This is Hassan Bergamon who subsequently formed the group Rango, making their stage debut in 2001 and have since toured in many countries. Hassan is seen here, centre stage at Band on the Wall.
