Pearl diving was almost as hard for the Gulf’s women as it was for the men. Not only did they have to fulfil their traditional roles as mothers and homemakers but they also had to do all the jobs traditionally carried out by men. Worse still was the anguish of not knowing whether their men were safe or even alive, as the loss of pearl boats and their crew was a common occurrence. Towards the end of the four-month pearling season, it was customary for women to put their finest clothes on beneath their abaya and hijab and go to the shore to appeal to the sea to send their men home safely. Beating the water with palm fronds, the women would join together to sing 'Tob tob ya bahar!' ('Atone, atone O sea!')
