Songwriter Merle Travis grew up in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, in the heart of theCoal Mining region’s industrial-scale coal mines. Travis wrote Sixteen Tons in the fall of 1946 as a tribute to the coal-mining life of his father, who said: "I can't afford to die. I owe my soul to the company store," in reference to coal-company owned stores where miners bought food and supplies with money advanced by the company. "You load sixteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt" (to the company store).
