I'm right at home in a canoe, but I've always been hesitant about kayaks; something about that rolling maneuver gives me the willies.It's like the difference between skateboarding and snowboarding; when you're connected to the equipment, it's a different game. Dan from Alaska Backcountry Outfitters was going to have us novices paddle around on the local lake, but as the weather is cooperating, he feels we'll be okay on Lynn C****, which is fine with us, being closer and probably more scenic. Scott, our guide for the morning, meets us early, as we'd requested, and after some preliminary instructions, we're off. I'm enjoying being in the stern as I get control of the rudder, which almost seems like cheating compared to the skills involved in steering a canoe. I didn't know kayaks had rudders! There's virtually no traffic to contend with this morning, so no waves to deal with, and we mosey around Battery Point as Scott fills us in on local historical and biological matters. We see a seal ahead of us, bobbing in the water, eagles in the treetops on the shoreline. After a bit we pull into Bare Man Cove and get out to stretch our legs.
