As nothing was known wet I was to check back around noon to find out. Since there was time to kill the eco-guards were kind enough to take me out on a patrol. Our group consisted of four guards, three Bilo and a BaAka tracker who took point. Two guards carried AK-47 assault rifles but I was told that the chances of being shot at right now were "very low." As we walked through the forest the guards looked for any signs of human activity. Tracks, broken branches, or disturbed vegetation could indicate that poachers were or had been there. Cable snares are the main concern. Illegal in both the reserve and the park , cable snares are indiscriminate killers. The snared animal usually dies a long painful death and is often long since dead by the time the poacher returns for the carcass. By that time the meat can already be rotten. Even so they sell and people buy the meat sometimes causing illness in those who eat it. After traveling through dense forest and streams chest deep in places we came to a clearing where a hunting camp had been.
