From the pulsating heart of the Arabic-speaking world, a company of actors from Algeria, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq perform this two-part epic theatrical event in its US premiere at CST this summer. Erotic, brutal, witty and poetic, "One Thousand and One Nights" are the enthralling stories told by the young and brilliant Shahrazad under sentence of death to King Shahrayar. Written in Arabic from tales gathered in India, Persia and across the great Arab empire, these mesmerizing stories tell of the real and the supernatural, of love and marriage, power and punishment, rich and poor, and the endless trials and uncertainties of fate. Set in the thriving cosmopolitan cities of the Islamic world, this production will show the gripping, multi-faceted stories as they really are. Dramatized and directed by Tim Supple, who enchanted Chicago audiences with his Indian "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" as part of CST's 2008 World's Stage Series, and adapted by the acclaimed Lebanese novelist Hanan Al-Shaykh, the US premiere of "One Thousand and One Nights" is told over two compelling parts with projected English translation—allowing you to fully immerse yourself in these remarkable tales.
